Goats and Mustard Weed

Goats will eat most types of weeds.

Flag this photo

Goats may be a valuable tool for mustard weed control because they typically consume most brush and weed types. If you choose to utilize goats as a means of weed control, be aware the weed removal process is slower than when spraying herbicides. In the long run, however, they may be your least financial and environmental costly option.

Is Garcinia Cambogia Common?

Print this articleGarcinia cambogia, little known in the United States until recently, is becoming more common in health-food stores as a weight-loss supplement. Its main active ingredient in extract or supplement form is hydroxycitric acid. The banning of ephedra in diet supplements due to reported fatalities has made ephedra-free herbs such as Garcinia cambogia more attractive in the weight-loss market. Garcinia cambogia is not native to North America, and is not common in the wild on this continent.

Also known as Malabar tamarind, the Garcina cambogia tree is native to India and southeast Asia with a fruit similar to a pumpkin in appearance. Garcina cambogia seeds contain approximately 50 percent oil. Over a dozen weight-loss supplements containing extract of Garcina cambogia are on the market as of July 2011. Its active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, is also found in other tropical native plants.

Uses

Garcinia cambogia is primarily marked for weight reduction, which raises medical concerns in pregnant women regarding fetal size and development. For that reason, pregnant women or those trying to conceive should not take Garcinia cambogia. Because of the demand for weight-loss products, new supplements frequently appear on the market, many with anecdotal claims about efficacy. However, at the time of publication, there is no data confirming that Garcinia cambogia is effective for weight-loss purposes.

Contraindications

According to warnings on product labels, diabetic patients should not take Garcinia cambogia supplements. Pregnant or nursing women should also avoid it. Caregivers should not allow patients with dementia or Alzheimer's to consume Garcinia cambogia. Patients taking cardiac medication, including calcium-channel blockers, glycosides or any type of anti-arrhythmics should not ingest this supplement. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are no studies in available literature concerning these safety issues. As with any over-the-counter supplement, consumers should consult a physician before trying the product. People seeking to lose weight should also contact a health care provider about feasible choices in their individual situation.

Studies

At the time of publication, no clinical human studies substantiate the weight-loss claims made by Garcinia cambogia proponents. Several very limited trials did not include placebo groups or consisted of a small number of participants. In a three-month 1998 double-blind clinical trial with 42 patients and a placebo-controlled group, those taking 3,000 milligrams of Garcinia cambogia daily did not experience notable weight loss or loss of fat mass than those taking the placebo.

How to Increase RAM Drive Size Beyond 32 MB

Print this articleRAM drives, or RAMDISK drives, allow you to run compatible applications completely within memory used to simulate a physical hard drive. This usually results in much faster application performance as read/write requests and data execution inside the RAMDISK drive does not suffer from speed bottlenecks introduced by a mechanical hard disk. Ramdrive.sys is a DOS system file that allowed users to run applications in a virtual memory device so they ran faster. However, Ramdrive.sys is not compatible with Windows, and has a 32MB memory usage limit, which limits its usefulness with many modern applications. Therefore, if you want to create a RAMDISK drive larger than 32MB, you must install a Windows-based RAM drive application.

Related Searches:Difficulty:ModerateInstructions 1

Download a Windows-based application that allows you to use physical system memory to create virtual RAMDisk drives on your computer. Programs such as AR Ram Disk, DataRam RamDisk Freeware Version and VSuite RamDisk Free Edition all allow you to create virtual memory hard drives larger than 32MB. Save the setup file to your computer.

2

Click "Start," then "Computer." Open the folder in which you saved the RamDIsk application setup file. Double-click the setup file, and then follow the prompts to install the RAMDisk program on your PC. Restart the computer if prompted.

3

Launch the RamDisk application on your PC. Click the "Settings" or "Drive Settings" tab. Enter the desired size of the RamDisk drive in megabytes in the "Disk Size" or "RAMDisk Size" box. Select the "FAT32 Partition" type unless you want to run older DOS-based application on the virtual drive; then, select the "FAT16 Partition" option. If the RAMDisk application has a "Boot Sector Settings" option, choose "Windows boot sector" for FAT32 partitions and "DOS boot sector" for FAT16 partitions.

4

Click the "Load Options" or "Preferences" tab. Enable the "Load Image at Startup" or "Start RAMDisk at Startup" option if you want the program to create the virtual drive automatically when Windows starts.

5

Enable the "Save RAMDisk Image on Close" or "Save Disk Image on Shutdown" option to save the contents of the RAMDisk drive to disk when you exit Windows. This is important if you plan to install an application on the RAMDisk drive. If you do not enable the option, then you must install the program to the RAMDisk drive every time you want to use it. If the RAMDisk drive application has an "Auto Save" function, enable it as well.

6

Enter a label for the virtual drive in the "Disk Label" or "Disk Nickname" field. Click the "Start RAMDisk" or "Launch RAMDrive" button. The application creates a virtual hard drive in system RAM and adds a drive letter for the device in Windows Explorer. Use the drive as you would any other physical hard drive or USB storage device.

How to Remove Green Algae From a Salt-Treated Pool

Keep your salt pool clear and free from green algae.

Flag this photo

Green algae is a problem common to swimming pool owners, even owners of salt water swimming pools. Green algae grows when spores enter your pool and receive the sunlight and temperatures they need to thrive. Green algae outbreaks quickly become severe if left untreated or if not treated right away. Though effective treatment of your pool is possible, be aware that persistence and hard work are required for this problem.

Clean your pool filter. A clear filter is necessary to maintain proper water circulation in your swimming pool. Proper water circulation is a key weapon in the battle against algae. Take a look at your pressure gauge on the pool filter and see if the filter needs cleaning. Backwash the filter to dislodge any debris, then run the filter normally.

2

Switch your salt chlorinator to the super chlorination setting, which generally brings the chlorination level up to 10 times its usual level. The goal is to bring the chlorination up as high as possible as quickly as possible to kill out any algae. Leave your chlorinator on this setting for the amount of time recommended by your salt water chlorinator owner's manual.

3

Clean your pool. Use a brush to brush away any algae on the sides, bottom, steps and any other surfaces of your salt pool. This loosens the algae and displaces it so that it becomes easier to kill. Keep the pool in super chlorination mode with the pump powered on during this process to remove the maximum amount of algae.

4

Treat your water with an algaecide formulated especially for salt water swimming pools. This chemical kills algae plants and spores while preventing further outbreaks.

5

Run your pool pump continuously until all algae is gone from the pool and the water looks clear. This is imperative to properly removing as much algae as possible from your pool.

6

Use a salt water pool testing kit to test your water regularly after the outbreak is cleared up. Regular testing keeps you aware of what your chlorine levels are and whether they need to be higher or lower. Salt pool pH levels should ideally range between 7.2 and 7.6. Maintaining proper chlorine and pH levels in your pool prevents future algae outbreaks.

Tips & Warnings

Never use products for algae that are not specifically formulated for salt water swimming pools. Using products for chemically-treated pools could damage your salt system and severely damage the operation of your swimming pool.

How to Get Green Algae-Type Stuff Off a Concrete Pool

A pool filled with green algae can be a problem.

Flag this photo

Green algae are the most common yet simplest algae type to remove from your swimming pool. When algae grow in concrete in-ground pools, they stick to pool walls and continue to grow while turning your water green if left untreated. The earlier you attack algae the easier it is to clean. Removing algae from your concrete pool involves cleaning your filter, adding shock and doing a lot of brushing.

Backwash your pool filter and clean it thoroughly before adding chemicals. The process of backwashing differs, based on whether you own a sand, diatomaceous earth or cartridge filter. When you're finished, turn on the filter and run it continuously for at least 24 hours.

2

Test the pool water chemistry and balance the pH and alkalinity levels as needed. As a pool owner, you should have chemicals on hand for increasing and decreasing pH and alkalinity. Adjust as indicated on the testing strips. Dosages can vary widely based on readings.

3

Add 1 lb. of diluted granular shock for every 7,000 gallons of pool water. Broadcast it evenly over the surface of the water and run the filter for 24 hours. Shock will begin to clear the water and kill the green algae.

4

Scrub the pool walls with a nylon pool brush. After shocking the pool, the algae will rub off more easily. Continue running the filter and backwash again after brushing. Test the chlorine levels in the pool. Maintain an active amount of sanitizer (chlorine) in your pool to continue killing algae. You may have to brush several times over the course of a few days before the algae are completely eliminated
